Toni Morrison talks a lot about the "funk" in her book, The Bluest eye. My impression of what the "funk" represents is a positive meaning to one's blackness. Media has shaped our society to believe in only one standard of beauty, one that is very superficial, causing much low self-esteem for many of those who do not fit that mold. She introduces the "funk" in celebration of, not only the beauty of one's blackness, but beauty in all forms. This painting gave me a visual of this "funk."
